SAG Awards Wrap-Up: Best and Worst-Dressed!

The award season is in full swing with the Grammys and Oscars coming up later this month. Last night was the SAG Awards, where actors celebrate other actors. Some people chose to celebrate in high-fashion style, while others missed the mark by a million miles. Who wore what, who looked awful (sorry, ladies), and who knocked it out of the park? One thing was certain: Marchesa was definitely the designer of the night!

I hold a SAG card and therefore this award show holds a special place in my heart. The SAG Awards are the only televised awards show to exclusively honor performers. The awards show is the only one of its kind to honor an entire ensemble (cast) of a feature film (as opposed to ‘Best Film’, ‘Best TV Show’). Acting is most definitely a collaborative process, and the SAG Awards recognize this.

As far as recognizing fashion over talent, that’s what I’m really here for! So who wore the best?

Sofia Vergara never has trouble knocking it out of the park, this time in a bright pink, beautifully tailored gown by Marchesa. This woman has graduated from ‘prom wear’ a couple of years ago to near-flawlessness when it comes to fashion choices. Props to her stylist, of course!

I doubt George Clooney would be seen with anyone less than gorgeous, and though I’m not a fan, I couldn’t deny the beauty of the Marchesa gown Stacy Keibler rocked last night. Black, lacy and fitted, she looked simply divine next to her nominated current beau. Angelina Jolie was all feminine rock-’n'-roll in a black Jenny Packham halter with vintage jewels. Nominee Kyra Sedgwick made me do a double-take in her red Pucci gown with cut-out back: so skinny! She really looked hot next to her equally cute hubby Kevin Bacon. Little-known (in celeb circles) actress Ahna O’Reilly of The Help also stunned in a backless red gown. Zoe Saldana went for a covered-up Givenchy Haute Couture gown that was as pretty as it was unique. Julianna Marguiles finally got an A+ in my book with a custom Calvin Klein. As for the men, my longtime fave Kenneth Branagh looked dashing. I said it: DASHING!

Other notables: Emma Stone, cute in McQueen with fabulous sky-high black heels and GLEE’s Naya Rivera in a plunging gown that showed off her curves in a sexy yet demure fashion. Michelle Williams would have been in my top 3 had her red gown not had the odd length; ditto for the matchy-matchy red satin shoes. The lace and cut of the gown were still beautiful, and her pixie cut remains understated and lovely. Viola Davis also looked lovely in Marchesa, though I was a little afraid her overly-body-glittered top half was going to pop out of her gorgeous gown! Natalie Portman and Amber Heard also looked award-appropriate in flattering gowns with simple details.

Worst? Tina Fey seems to miss the mark on fit almost every time, and rarely wears anything that flatters her body. Her sparkly upper half simply didn’t look good. I often wonder if these people pay stylists for these award shows. If they do, they should get their money back. Fey’s 30 Rock co-star Jane Krakowski wore an Antonio Berardi number that was equally unappealing and unflattering. Nominee Diane Lane bored in a blue David Meister gown that screamed ‘Bridesmaids!’ even though she didn’t appear in that film.

Many would put Rose Byrne (Bridesmaids, Damages) on their best-dressed list, but I felt her sparkly Elie Saab jumpsuit with a harsh bob was a bit overkill. When they showed her sitting at her table, you could see the bones in her chest sticking out: not exactly pretty, in my book, though she is a gorgeous woman and talented actress.

The Screen Actors Guild Awards also included the Life Achievement Award. This year that prestigious award was presented to Mary Tyler Moore. She wore a shiny black pant suit that was age appropriate and yet very current.

Who was your best-dressed? Worst? Who surprised you most? Let us know in the COMMENTS!

Until next time!
